Jim Hiller is the new head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Between that hiring and Toronto’s trade with Philadelphia, it’s been a chaotic and unpredictable 24 hours in Leafs Nation.
Needless to say, Wednesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take was absolutely jam-packed as Jay Rosehill returned to the mix to help break it all down. Obviously, we started with the Hiller announcement. It’s a name that seemed to come out of nowhere, but it’s far too early to make a definitive assessment of the hire one way or the other. It’s not the splashiest move, but that’s perfectly fine. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense when you consider who’s making the decision. This feels like a very John Chayka hire. Ultimately, time will tell whether it works out, but as is always the case with coaching hires, the proof will be in the pudding.
Once we dissected all the breaking news, we turned our attention to the Toronto Marlies.
On the same day the Maple Leafs moved on from Joseph Woll, Artur Akhtyamov delivered a 24-save shutout as the Marlies edged Chicago 1-0 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead in the Calder Cup Final. Easton Cowan scored the game’s lone goal, continuing his outstanding playoff run. Now, the Marlies are just one win away from a Calder Cup championship and will get their first opportunity to close out the series on home ice Thursday night.
Meantime, as mentioned, it’s been a whirlwind few days in Leafs Nation.
On Tuesday, John Chayka made his first move as Maple Leafs GM, sending Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to Philadelphia. Naturally, we broke down every angle of the deal. Much like the Jim Hiller hiring, it’s far too early to pass judgment on the trade. That said, it will be fascinating to see how Toronto utilizes the added cap flexibility moving forward.
One thing is becoming increasingly clear: with Chayka calling the shots, this feels like a summer where Leafs fans should expect the unexpected.
After that, Leafs forward Dakota Joshua stopped by discuss a busy week in Leafs Nation. He reacted to the Hiller hire, calling it an exciting move and a sign of the fresh start the organization needs after falling well short of expectations last season. Joshua also weighed in on the Leafs winning the draft lottery, the mood around the team heading into the offseason, and the Woll/Benoit trade to Philadelphia. Plus, he opened up about recovering from a lacerated kidney injury and shared some behind-the-scenes stories from the season, including his perspective on William Nylander’s viral middle-finger moment.
Lastly, we also addressed Mitch Marner’s comments from locker clean-out day in Vegas and the end of Hockey Night in Canada as we’ve known it.
Rest assured, you won’t want to miss Thursday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take as we preview Game 4 of the Calder Cup Final and continue to break down all the developments from what’s been an incredibly busy week in Leafs Nation.
