Welcome to the yearly wrap up of the top read articles over the last year!
One name that has circled the rumour mills for years has been Jake Gardiner. Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of 2008, he was traded to the Leafs in 2011 and was a mainstay until he left in free agency prior to last season.
In February, rumours were circling his name with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the Carolina Hurricanes were shopping him.
An article written by TLN editor Jon Steitzer on Feb. 20 speculating Leafs in interest came in as the 19th most-read article this year.
According to Elliotte Friedman the Canes are shopping Jake Gardiner. Should the Leafs be interested?
Here’s some of what Steitzer wrote:
At $4.05M for 3 years beyond this one, there are real dollars attached to the risk associated with Gardiner. Luckily, no one knows what Jake Gardiner is better than the Leafs, except for maybe the Canes, and they can tackle that risk. I’m not sure I envision a world where salary is retained on Gardiner, and I can’t see any equally questionable contract on the Leafs they’d send the other way, so maybe we’re already at a standstill on how this deal could work, though Gardiner as the part of something bigger or the Canes paying the Leafs to take Gardiner’s contract hold some appeal for me.
