Welcome back to a much-beloved series on the Nation Network: Throwback Thursday. We’ve resurrected this weekly piece from the grave in thanks to a fancy website that allows us to take a look at newspaper archives.

So without further ado…

On this day in 1938, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks squared off at the Chicago Stadium in a game that ended in a 1-1 tie with fists flying.

It was the second game in two nights between the clubs in front of a crowd of 11,000.

Chicago Blackhawks LW Paul Thompson opened the scoring at the 10:47 mark of the first frame lifting a shot over Maple Leafs goalie Turk Broda. But moments before, a fight broke out “between Cully Dalhstrom, young Hawk wing man, and Murph Chamberlain of the Leafs, who staged a fair wrestling match,” the Associated Press penned.

And as that fight raged, another broke out too.

“The affair spread quickly with defence Bill MacKenzie of Chicago and Reg Hamilton of Toronto trading punches for about a minute before they could be parted.”

Toronto scored their lone goal 9:00 into the second period of the came off the stick of Syl Apps, who scored from a short pass from Jimmy Fowler to beat Hawks goalie Mike Karakas.
