This week in 1936 (May 6), the Toronto Maple Leafs purchased minor-league goalie Walter “Turk” Broda from the Detroit Red Wings for a sum of $8,000.

According to usinflationcalculator.com, that’s equivalent of just under $150,000 in 2020 dollars.

Broda went on to have a storied NHL career playing for the Leafs for 14 years and after starting in the league, it didn’t take long for him to establish himself as a top goalie in the league.

He led the league in wins twice (1940-41, 1947-48) as he helped lead the Leafs to five Stanley Cup titles, three all-star appearances and two Vezina trophies both won when he led the league in wins.

Broda had left the league for two and a half years to fight in WW2, before returning to be a big part of the Stanley Cup wins in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951.

His #1 was retired by the Leafs and he was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1967, five years before he died at 58 years old from a heart attack.
