This week in 1984, on May 12, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed undrafted free agent Steve Thomas after he went unselected in thee entry draft.

The right-winger had been playing for the Toronto Marlboros of the OHL the season prior where he scored 51 goals and 105 points in 70 games. For some reason, that season wasn’t good enough for him to be taken in the 12 round, 250 player draft.

Over his first two seasons, he split time with the Leafs and St. Catherines Saints of the AHL. In the minors, he scored 122 points in 83 games while scoring 59 points in 83 NHL games.

Thomas only spent one more year with the Leafs in his first stint with the club where he scored 62 points in 78 games. On Sept. 3, 1987, he was traded alongside Bob McGill and Rick Vaive to the Chicago Blackhawks for Eddy Olczyk and Al Secord.

Thomas went on to spend six years in Chicago before stints with the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils.

He returned to Toronto in 1988 spending three more years there.

Thomas retired in 2004 having spent 20 years and 1235 games playing in the NHL. He retired having scored 421 goals and 933 points.
