This week in 1999 (May 17th), the Toronto Maple Leafs took down the Pittsburgh Penguins in game six of the semi-finals as they advanced in the playoffs.

Toronto had cruised to a 97 points, 45-30-7 regular season that saw them score the most goals in the league with 268. That high powered offence beat the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round in six games before squaring up with the Penguins.

The teams traded the first three games with Pittsburgh taking the 2-1 series lead, but that didn’t last long. Toronto stormed back winning three straight, two in overtime, to take the series in the sixth game.

Garry Valk had scored the game-winner in overtime, his second tally of the game, to advance the Maple Leafs to the conference finals.

Lonny Bohonos and Mats Sundin both put up seven points in the series.

In the conference finals, however, Toronto would fall in five games to the Buffalo Sabres.
