The Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned defenceman Henry Thrun to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL), the team announced Sunday morning.
Thrun, 24, was originally recalled ahead of the Maple Leafs’ game on December 11 against his former team, the San Jose Sharks. He didn’t register a point in four games with the team before the Leafs re-assigned him to the Marlies following the return of veteran Chris Tanev to the defensive corps.
The Maple Leafs originally acquired Thrun this past summer after getting him in a 1-for-1 trade with the Sharks in exchange for veteran enforcer Ryan Reaves. He was originally a fourth-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2019 NHL Draft, but was traded to the Sharks before he appeared in a game for them.
Although the Leafs lost Thrun’s debut with the team, the defenceman admitted after the game that he had an extra chip on his shoulder facing his old squad.
“ Never done that before. That was obviously a unique thing,” he said. “ Just fired up. You want to compete against anyone, but especially against those guys, a lot of familiar faces. Just trying to help the team win. It was obviously not the result we wanted, but personally, it was a little bit extra gear playing those guys.”
The Maple Leafs are starting to inch closer to full health despite some names like Anthony Stolarz being out of commission for the foreseeable future, and Thrun heading back to the Marlies is an indication of that.
The Maple Leafs have won two games in a row and will look to start stringing some more together when they visit the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night. Head coach Craig Berube will meet with media to reveal certain lineup decisions and injury updates at 4:45 pm eastern time.
