Toronto Maple Leafs forward Sammy Blais will re-enter the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, while Jacob Quillan will be rendered a healthy scratch, head coach Craig Berube confirmed via TSN’s Mark Masters.
Blais did not play during Thursday’s loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 29-year-old left Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues during the third period, where Berube revealed post-game that Blais was coughing up blood. Blais has recorded a goal and three points in seven games.
Quillan made a strong impression during his first two games, as Berube touted his speed and tenacity.
“Q, he’s got great speed. He plays both wing and centre, but he brings speed to the game,” Berube said Tuesday morning about Quillan. “He’s a competitive kid, but his speed is what drives him. He’s fast, he’s powerful for a young kid.”
Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was on the ice early for the optional skate, per travelling reporters. Matthews has already been ruled out of Saturday’s game, but has been skating throughout the week, as he works his way through a lower-body injury sustained during a November 11 game against the Boston Bruins. Matthews recorded nine goals and 14 points in 17 games to start the year.
Matthew Knies was also on the ice during the optional skate. Knies was considered doubtful for Saturday’s game and missed the Leafs’ past two games due to a lower-body injury. The 22-year-old has recorded five goals and 22 points in 19 games this season.
Joseph Woll will start for the Maple Leafs. Woll has started the past three games, posting a 1-1-1 record with a .923 save percentage and 2.57 goals against average.
