Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll will start Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, head coach Craig Berube confirmed.
Woll sustained a lower-body injury on December 4 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Dennis Hildeby started all four games in Woll’s absence, with Artur Akhtyamov operating as his backup.
“Great to have him back. He was playing extremely well before the injury,” Berube said of Woll.
“It’s nice that Dennis came in and played well. We have confidence in him. We have confidence in both goalies and we’ll rotate them a bit more.”
Anthony Stolarz will see a specialist for consultation about his upper-body injury. Stolarz sustained the injury during a November 11 game against the Boston Bruins and the injury is more severe than the Leafs originally anticipated. Berube definitively ruled out a concussion for Stolarz.
“He is going to see somebody. Hopefully, we can get some good news out of it. He’s not making the progress we thought he’d make.”
Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer Joe Bowen is being celebrated by the team for his iconic career on Tuesday. Bowen is in his final season, operating as the defining voice of the Maple Leafs.
“What a great career and a great human being,” Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly said of Bowen, prior to Tuesday’s optional skate. “Just a huge part of this organization. He’s kind of one of those guys that you never imagine not being there, he’s a voice that you always imagine being a soundtrack for his team.”
“He’s one-of-one. He doesn’t try to be anyone else. He’s a fantastic human being. We’re lucky to have him around here, and on the personal side, he’s a ball of energy, so that’s great to see,” Maple Leafs forward Max Domi said of Bowen, while recounting the broadcaster’s famous call of Mats Sundin’s 500th goal.
