The Toronto Maple Leafs’ post-Olympic break woes continued on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 to the Montreal Canadiens, pushing their current losing streak to eight games.
The defeat on Tuesday saw the Maple Leafs fall behind 2-0 after the first period, being outshot 18-5 in what was a Montreal onslaught. Goaltender Joseph Woll was busy stopping 30-of-32 shots on the night and routinely facing high-danger chances as the Maple Leafs struggled to find their legs.
“I think the first period we were not where we wanted to be, although we had a few chances in the first, we just didn’t get a lot of shots,” Woll said post-game. “I think after that our game kind of opened up. It was a little more even on both sides. It was great to see a response like that. We battled all the way to the end, I thought it was a good game.”
Seeing 18 shots and being tested early in a game is something Woll finds helps settle him into a contest, as opposed to not being tested at all in the opening frame.
“Whenever the team gets a bunch of opportunities in the first, it helps you get into the game a little bit rather than just standing there,” Woll said. “I don’t hate that, getting some touches early.”
After the loss on Tuesday, Woll’s 2025-26 season stats sit at 13-11-4 through 29 games, with a 3.09 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Woll touched on the outcomes that he has been seeing this season.
“For my job, I can only control so much right, that’s how I play and how I focus, so I think it’s wasted energy to focus too much on the outcome,” Woll said. “Regardless of what game it is, whether it’s preseason, playoffs or regular season. Whatever the circumstance, I think that’s what I need to focus on.”
Last week saw the Maple Leafs move on from three players in Nicolas Roy, Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton as the National Hockey League trade deadline came and went. The Maple Leafs’ goaltender touched on the week it was inside the team’s locker room.
“I think that the deadline is a stressful time for everyone, especially when we are in this position,” Woll said. “I think in general, just as a consensus, everyone relaxed a little bit after that. The goal is to play the best hockey that we can.”
The Maple Leafs return to action on Thursday night when they host the Anaheim Ducks at Scotiabank Arena.
