Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp, the team confirmed Monday. Domi is out indefinitely, due to complications arising from the procedure.
Domi played through the undisclosed injury throughout the 2025-26 season. Domi recorded 12 goals and 36 points in 80 games for the Maple Leafs during the 2025-26 campaign, where he was often used as a top-six right wing. Toronto controlled 44 percent of the expected goals when Domi was on the ice at 5-on-5, and he posted a -29 rating, the second-worst total on the team.
The 31-year-old is under contract through the 2027-28 season at a $3.75 million cap hit per year. During a summer where the Maple Leafs are expected to undergo widespread changes, Domi is expected to be retained by the new management regime. Domi is good friends with Maple Leafs senior executive advisor to hockey operations Mats Sundin, and built a previous working relationship with general manager John Chayka. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley rejected the notion that Domi’s father, Tie, was involved in the search process for the new general manager and senior executive advisor of hockey operations.
Domi struggled in an expanded role with the Maple Leafs, particularly on the defensive side of the puck. It was never revealed that Domi was playing through an injury and he battled through a particularly laborious second half of the year, where the playoffs were out of reach. Domi was commended by his teammates for his willingness to fight and energetic playing style, during a lost season.
Although Domi’s tenure with the Maple Leafs hasn’t always been what fans envisioned from the start, he’s been remarkably durable for the Maple Leafs, playing 70-plus games in each of his three seasons with the team. Domi will work with the Maple Leafs’ staff to get ready for camp, where he’s expected to remain with the top-nine for the 2026-27 campaign.
