Max Domi emerged as the overtime hero for the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 2, ripping a shot off the post and in, to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in Game 2. It was Domi’s greatest moment in his two season with the Leafs, and after the game, he reflected upon his game-winning goal that provides his team with a commanding 2-0 series lead.
“Every night there’s a different hero in the playoffs, it doesn’t really matter who scores, as long as we get the win,” Domi said to Sportsnet’s Kyle Bukauskas post-game. “Obviously, it’s a great play by Benny. Shoot the puck man, anything can happen.”
Maple Leafs defenceman Simon Benoit intercepted an errant pass from Senators forward Drake Batherson and took off up the ice. Benoit dropped the puck to Domi, who then cut through the middle, beating two Senators players, including Batherson, before wiring it home and sending Scotiabank Arena into a frenzy.
“Those two games are behind us now,” Domi said. “It’s going to be a real good test. Like I said, they’re a heck of a hockey club. They’re going to be hungry to play in front of their fans for the first time in a few years. They’re going to be buzzing and we’re going to have to match their intensity.”
Domi’s teammates couldn’t be happier for him after scoring a goal that will serve as a pivotal moment in the rivalry.
“He works on his craft so much on ice, off ice, how he takes care of his body, just how he is such a pro,” Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner said post-game. “I was lucky enough to get to see that in London as well when I was really young, to learn off of him was amazing, to see nothing has changed and he’s even more of a pro now, it’s pretty special. Yeah, that was really cool for him to get that, I was really happy for him.”
Domi struggled throughout the contest, and there were suggestions that he should be replaced by Scott Laughton on the third line, before he scored the game-winning goal. These concerns are effectively moot for one night, as all anyone will remember from Game 2 is Domi’s winner, which has to be a focal point in the series.
The 30-year-old is putting the moment behind him, as the Maple Leafs prepare for Game 3 on Thursday evening.
“We’re just getting started, so it’s going to feel even better as we go.”
Domi’s comments may prove to be prophetic, as the Maple Leafs could close out the Battle of Ontario as early as Saturday night. For now, his goal will be played across Southern Ontario on a loop until the puck drops Thursday.
