Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan is projected to re-enter the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, after being listed as a healthy scratch for the past five games.
Cowan last played on January 29 against the Seattle Kraken, where he received 9:44 of ice time. The 20-year-old joined Nicolas Roy and Bobby McMann during line rushes at Saturday’s morning skate. Cowan has recorded seven goals and 17 points in 43 games, while the Maple Leafs sport a plus-six goal differential at 5-on-5 when he’s been on the ice this season.
“I just feel like it’s time to get him back in now,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Cowan after Saturday’s morning skate, via Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun. “I don’t want him sitting out. He needs to play. He’s a young kid, he’s a good player. Taking him out of the lineup, going back to his Seattle game, I felt like he was just a little overwhelmed
Joseph Woll is projected to start Saturday’s game. Woll allowed three goals on 35 shots during Thursday’s loss to the Panthers.
Dakota Joshua will join Scott Laughton and Nick Robertson on a new-look fourth line. Joshua returned to the lineup during Thursday’s loss to the Panthers, after recovering from a lacerated kidney, which kept him out of the lineup since late December.
Toronto is looking to keep its minuscule playoff odds alive, after losing consecutive games to Tampa Bay and Florida this week. It could be the last look at this iteration as we know it, with the Maple Leafs expected to be sellers at the upcoming NHL trade deadline.
