The Toronto Maple Leafs will ice the same lineup, goaltender Joseph Woll included, as they look to avoid the season series sweep to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
The Leafs lost their second and third games of the season to the Red Wings, falling 6-3 on the road on October 11 and losing 3-2 at home on October 13. While the Red Wings have more or less defined mediocrity for the past half-decade or so, they along with the rest of the Atlantic Division have been playing some incredible hockey of late, with the Wings having won six of their last seven games.
The Maple Leafs have also been playing their best hockey of the season lately, but they’re coming off their worst game in recent memory after losing 6-3 to the Minnesota Wild on Monday. Wednesday night’s tilt is the most important game they’ve played against the Red Wings in a long time, and despite a poor effort on Monday, head coach Craig Berube is throwing his support behind the same group that skated in that game to get the job done against Detroit. This includes Joseph Woll, who has allowed eleven goals in his past two games.
“With the travel and everything, our team wasn’t at our best,” Berube told reporters at the team’s optional skate on Wednesday. “I don’t think we gave him the opportunity to be successful in that game. He’s been our guy, so that’s why I’m going with him.”
The lack of lineup changes also include Matthew Knies, who confirmed that he hasn’t been playing at 100% for a while as he deals with a lower-body injury. Despite this, he picked up a point against the Wild and was still one of their better players in the loss.
“It’s one of those that the more you play, the more wear and tear on it, it’s not really going to get better,” Knies said after Monday’s loss. “The Christmas break obviously helped a lot. It’s a pretty tough schedule we have right now, playing every other day. Recovery is pretty important.”
Puckdrop between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings is at 7:00 pm eastern time.
