Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares did not participate in Tuesday’s practice due to the flu, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Tavares and the Maple Leafs are preparing for a two-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers, resuming their schedule after the Olympic break. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube expects Tavares to return for Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and said he told the veteran forward to take practice off.
William Nylander returned to practice for the first time since the Olympic break. Nylander and Sweden were eliminated by the United States during the quarterfinals. The 29-year-old leads the Maple Leafs in scoring with 52 points (18 goals, 34 assists) through 40 games.
“Obviously, I’m super happy for (Auston) and what he was able to accomplish there,” Nylander said, following Tuesday’s practice. “But I’m upset that we lost. But it was a great game and they did a great job. It’s not an easy feat to win.”
Nylander concluded practice by leading the stretch, to applause from his teammates.
Auston Matthews did not attend practice, as he’s visiting the White House with the rest of the United States men’s national hockey team. Matthews captained the team to their first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime. Berube expects Matthews to play Wednesday’s game against the Lightning, but will re-evaluate after speaking to the captain.
“He’s riding a pretty good high right now with winning. He’s feeling good. Again, we will evaluate that tomorrow and I’ll get a better feel when I talk to him tonight,” Berube said of Matthews, following Tuesday’s practice.
