Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby will start Sunday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, head coach Craig Berube confirmed.
“I just think (Anthony) Stolarz has been obviously overworked, we all know that,” Berube said Sunday afternoon.
Hildeby was thrust into action during Saturday’s loss against the Boston Bruins during the second period, as Anthony Stolarz was pulled after allowing four goals. Stolarz told reporters after the game that he put Hildeby in ‘a shit situation’ and commended his teammate for stepping up.
Berube did not confirm who will replace Scott Laughton in the lineup. Laughton left Saturday’s game with an upper-body injury and was ruled out. Berube told reporters after the game that he believed Bruins defenceman Nikita Zadorov landed a head shot, but would have to take another look at the incident.
Berube did not provide a timeline on Laughton’s return, but the veteran forward is ruled out of Sunday’s contest.
Nick Robertson is in the best form of his career, recording six points during his past five games. Robertson scored during Saturday’s loss while placed on the second power play unit, and spoke about what has been working well lately.
“I’m happy with it, I think I’m playing with more confidence which obviously comes with more ice time. My game is to be tenacious and moving my feet, shooting the puck when I can, making plays as well and I’m happy with it so far.”
The 24-year-old has recorded four goals and eight points in 14 games this season, and it’s clear that he’s made a strong impression on Berube with his recent uptick in form.
“Tenacious, work ethic is everything for him,” Berube said of Robertson on Sunday. “For me, that’s what he’s doing. That’s every shift. He has the ability to put the puck in the net with his shot, but it’s the work, just working, tenacious on it everywhere on the ice.”
