The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled defenceman Henry Thrun from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, the team announced Friday morning.
Thrun, 24, has been up and down between the NHL and the AHL this season and was likely recalled in the wake of potential injuries to defencemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Carlo, who both suffered injuries on Wednesday night against the Detroit Red Wings. Both players’ status are currently up in the air for Friday night’s Mitch Marner homecoming against the Vegas Golden Knights, pending an update from head coach Craig Berube. Thrun has skated in four games for the Maple Leafs in 2025-26 and has 14 points in 28 games with the Marlies.
Although Ekman-Larsson’s injury was apparent, leaving the game against the Red Wings shortly after it started after falling awkwardly in the first period, Carlo’s injury wasn’t immediately known about until Chris Johnston of The Athletic reported on it the following day.
The Maple Leafs originally acquired Thrun from the San Jose Sharks over the summer, in a one-for-one trade with veteran enforcer Ryan Reaves heading the other way. The Massachusetts native is currently in the second of a two-year contract worth $1 million annually. He was with the team when they hosted the Sharks, his former squad, and admitted that while it took a bit to adjust to the speed of the NHL after playing in the AHL for so long, he had an extra gear against his former team.
“ I thought it was fine. The game moves so much faster at this pace,” he said to reporters after the game when asked about his comfort level. “It took me a minute or two defensively, and other than that, it was fine.  Couple plays in the second that I wanted back, but overall I thought that was fine.”
The Maple Leafs are set to host the Vegas Golden Knights Friday at 7 pm eastern time.
