The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Vincent Borgesi to a two-year contract that begins in the 2026-27 season, the team announced on Tuesday. The team added in a release that Borgesi will join the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for the remainder of the 2025-26 season on an amateur tryout.
According to PuckPedia, Borgesi’s contract carries an AAV of $987.5K along with signing bonuses of $97.5K in the first year and $100K in the second year.
The 22-year-old right-shot defenceman stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs 185 pounds. Borgesi is fresh off completing his collegiate career with the Northeastern University Huskies, where he captained the team during his senior season. Borgesi led all Huskies defencemen and ranked sixth overall in team scoring with 20 points (five goals and 15 assists) in 36 games, which was enough to earn him a nomination for the 2026 Hobey Baker Award.
While Borgesi is lacking in size and weight, he makes up for it with high mobility and impressive footspeed. He has a high hockey-IQ that allows him to make the right plays at both ends of the ice, but his play in the offensive zone is his biggest strength as he moves laterally to create space along the offensive blueline and keep pucks in play. Borgesi is also no slouch in the defensive end, as he can block shots, use his speed to break up chances, and has a good stick.
“Vincent Borgesi is a small but skilled defenseman, one that many NHL teams seemed interested in,” Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis wrote on X about Borgesi. “Productive four years at Northeastern. Good skater, smart playmaker. Toronto’s signing here is most likely about Marlies depth, but I like it.”
Despite going undrafted, Borgesi did earn invitations to the development camp of the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, and the Florida Panthers in 2025. He was also named to the United States Collegiate Selects Team roster for the 2025 Spengler Cup where he posted one assist in four games and served as team captain, guiding his team to the Spengler Cup Final before falling to hosts HC Davos.
Across 134 games with the Huskies, Borgesi amassed a combined 80 points (16 goals and 64 assists) throughout his collegiate career.
