Anthony Stolarz once again headlines Maple Leafs on latest Daily Faceoff trade board

Following last weekend’s blockbuster Brady Tkachuk deal, Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin published the latest edition of his NHL trade board on Tuesday. And with the Toronto Maple Leafs continuing their summer retool, there are a few names from Ontario’s capital on the board once again.
As always, the board is separated into four tiers. This week’s top tier of “Obvious trade candidates” includes the likes of Detroit Red Wings centreman Dylan Larkin, Edmonton Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse, and St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington. Tier 2, aka “Names to keep an eye on,” is where the Leafs begin to appear. Despite Toronto trading Joseph Woll, goaltender Anthony Stolarz once again shows up on Larkin’s board in this category. On the potential of a Stolarz trade, Larkin writes:
Is the Leafs’ goalie logjam clear now that Joseph Woll has been dealt, and does that mean Stolarz stays? It’s unclear. Not only does Toronto have Dennis Hildeby, who is no longer waiver exempt, but Artur Akhtyamov just won the AHL playoff MVP, so it still feels like the Leafs have excess depth in goal. Completely contradictory to that sentiment: we now have a report that the Leafs are kicking tires on veteran upgrades such as Bobrovsky and Binnington? The pieces don’t fit together here, so Stolarz stays on the board for now.
Before the Woll deal, Stolarz felt like the more obvious goaltender to remove from the mix, though his age, contract, and recent poor showings make him less valuable on the market. Still, at this point a move is not out of the question. The 32-year-old is about to start a four-year extension with a $3.75 million AAV and has a 16-team no-trade list.
In addition to Stolarz, defencemen Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo are both back in Tier 2 of the board this week. Carlo is not a super attractive piece, but between his low cap hit and his no-trade list shortening from eight to three teams on July 1st, he could be an easy one for the Leafs to send out for some prospects or draft capital. Meanwhile, Rielly has long been a rumoured trade candidate, though it’s finally starting to feel like there’s some real motion on getting something done:
The Leafs and new GM John Chayka find themselves in quite the quagmire with Rielly. He’s no longer the puck-moving defenseman they need him to be. He’s not a $7.5-million player despite his scoring contributions and leadership. The team would likely be better off moving on from him. He controls whether he goes at all via his NMC. But it sounds like his camp has at least slightly warmed to the idea of finding him a new home. As for the buyout route, the savings would be significant, but eight years paying him would be tough to stomach.
Rielly has a full no-movement clause, but is reportedly open to a trade and submitted an approved list of teams to Chayka.
The final Maple Leaf on the board is 23-year-old Matthew Knies, who falls under Tier 3 of “Big stars, big swings.” On Knies, Chayka writes:
John Chayka’s public claim that a Knies trade was “not probable” provided some clarity. A Knies trade isn’t at zero percent, but it’s apparent the Leafs will only trade their unicorn power forward for a massive overpay.
Notably, Toronto captain Auston Matthews appeared under Tier 3 on Larkin’s previous trade board, but has since been removed, as it seems the team’s new front office is committed to keeping their star in place.
