Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo has reportedly emerged in trade talks with other teams, according to TSN’s Chris Johnston.
”Another one of the Leafs ‘ defencemen, Brandon Carlo’s name has emerged in trade talks with other teams, and it makes a lot of sense,” he said during an appearance on Insider Trading on Tuesday. “ Look, the Leafs got right-shot Darren Raddysh in last week’s deal with Tampa Bay. They have the expectation that Chris Tanev will be back healthy for next season, and that does squeeze out some of the minutes someone like Carlo would get. The ask at this point in time for Carlo is multiple mid-range picks by the Leafs.”
Carlo’s name has been involved in trade rumours since last summer, when the Leafs were reportedly trying to send him to the Buffalo Sabres for J.J. Peterka. The fact that he is once again on the block suggests it is another part of GM John Chayka’s mission to reshape the blueline after the additions of Raddysh and Emil Andrae last week.
His first full season in Toronto was a difficult one as he could only muster up seven assists in 55 games. Carlo has fought through injuries throughout the 2025-26 campaign. The veteran defenceman required foot surgery in December, missing nearly two months of action after sustaining an injury during a November 13 game against the Los Angeles Kings. He was injured towards the end of the season and shut down before the final three games, though this one did not require surgery.
Carlo was acquired in a controversial trade with the Boston Bruins on March 7, 2025, in which the Leafs sent Fraser Minten, the Philadelphia Flyers’ 2025 fourth-round pick, and their own 2026 first-round pick with top-five protection. That first-round pick was dangerously close to falling to sixth overall before the Leafs miraculously won the 2026 Draft Lottery and the right to the first overall pick during Friday’s festivities.
In addition to Carlo, Morgan Rielly has also been involved in trade rumours as the likelihood that he will waive his no-move clause continues to increase. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported during an appearance on OverDrive on Monday that Rielly is open to a trade and has submitted an approval list of mostly Western Conference teams to Chayka in recent days.
