Despite the ongoing trade rumours surrounding Bobby McMann, it sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs have interest keeping him around long term.
According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, McMann’s agent and Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving are actively discussing a contract extension for the pending free-agent winger. McMann’s in the final season of his current deal, earning just $1.35 million AAV.
“There’s obvious trade interest in Bobby McMann, he’s a pending unrestricted free agent, but the Toronto Maple Leafs like him a lot too,” stated Pagnotta. “They’re actively engaged in contract talks right now with him and his agent to try and see if they can come to terms on an extension.”
“It sounds like that where’s the focus is at the moment, but it’s not to say they’ve shut down the opportunity for other teams to poke around if somebody blows them out of the water with a significant offer. That’s something they’re going to seriously consider. We’ll see how that goes, I’d imagine something in five-year range. Five years at $5 million AAV, I think, is something that gets that done.”
McMann has been playing mostly on the Leafs’ top line alongside Max Domi and Auston Matthews this season, and is having a career year. The speedy winger is averaging a career high 15:20 of ice-time per game, and has produced 19 goals, and 13 assists, for 32 points in 56 games. He plays mostly at even strength and has shown throughout this season he can be relied upon as a secondary scoring threat, and someone who brings a strong work ethic, each and every game, which includes an impressive 126 hits landed this season.
As far as potential trade destinations go, McMann’s been linked to a number of teams, including the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Colorado Avalanche. Should the Maple Leafs decide to trade the 29-year-old, it makes you wonder if they would circle back in the summer, to see if a contract extension could be finalized once free agency opens, while also cashing in on his current trade value.
