The longest tenured Toronto Maple Leafs player might be finding a new home this summer.
Morgan Rielly, drafted by the Leafs fifth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, has truly been around for the good, the bad, and the ugly. Phil Kessel led the team in scoring in his rookie year, backed up by a goaltending tandem of Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer. He just finished his 13th season with the team, and with inconsistency in his game combined with an inflated cap hit, he’s turned into a polarizing player among the fanbase and the media.
In a recent article by Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, it’s confirmed that new Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka is in talks with Rielly’s agent about a potential trade this summer.
“Discussions between John Chayka and Mats Sundin of the Leafs and Rielly’s agent, J.P. Barry, are ongoing about the possibility of Rielly going elsewhere this offseason, according to a league source who was granted anonymity so he could talk freely…but to get a deal done, the Leafs need to clear a series of not-insignificant obstacles first.” -Siegel
The obstacles in question include finding somebody who’s willing to take on his contract (four years remaining at $7.5 million annually with a no-move clause), and then figuring out if there’s a world where they can get assets back for him, or if it’s going to be more of a cap-dump sort of situation.
Rielly has tallied 549 points in 951 career games as a Maple Leaf. His career-best came in the form of a 20-goal, 72-point season in 2018-19, but he’s visibly struggled over the past two seasons, with 41 points two years ago, 36 points last season, and a ton of issues on the defensive side of the puck both years.
Regardless of what you might think of Rielly the hockey player, there’s no question that the city of Toronto would miss Rielly the person, that much is undisputed. He’s been a hell of a soldier during some dark times in Toronto, but at this point, a move elsewhere might be the best path forward for both sides.
