Wayne Simmonds has cleared waivers and will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies. Whether the Leafs ask him to play any games in the AHL remains to be seen, and presumably will be actively shopping him to interested parties.
Some of the appeal around putting Simmonds on waivers was freeing up a contract space enabling the Leafs to quickly bring in a defenseman. Instead, the Leafs now have an additional roster spot and now $6.7M of LTIR cap relief to work with.
