The Toronto Maple Leafs came out victorious in a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, but it didn’t come without a potentially significant blow in the form of yet another injury.
Star goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who had arguably his best performance of the season on Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils, left the game after the first period on Thursday night vs. Anaheim, with Joseph Woll relieving him in net to start the second period. It was announced by the Maple Leafs that Stolarz would not return to the game with a lower-body injury, and while Woll, who has been equally as sturdy to start the season, stood tall and secured the win, the attention has mostly remained on Stolarz and how long he might be out for, if at all.
Woll was asked postgame how he responded to his tandem partner going down with an injury and how he was able to settle into the game, and he said that while he’s happy the team secured the two points, he said there were mixed emotions seeing Stolarz get hurt.
“Obviously, I’m sad for him,” Woll told media following the win. “At the same time, I’ve got a job to do, and we have to kind of trigger that on, so I hope he’s alright.”
Woll said that he didn’t have a chance to talk to Stolarz after the game, but did have some time to prepare before he went into the game and said that getting ready mentally is the most important part when you’re suiting up to come in relief.
“He gave me a little bit of a heads up so I was just preparing like I was going to go on after intermission. It’s more mental than physical, once you get on the ice, warm up, get into the flow of it.”
Conor Timmins, who assisted on Max Pacioretty’s second goal of the way by setting him up for the tip-in, said that he thought the team responded well after Stolarz’s injury and did a good job of keeping the pressure off of Woll to close the game out.
“Yeah I thought we were on the offensive most of the night, especially in the third, you just want to keep the puck in their zone and control the play down low,” Timmins told reporters after the game. “…We trust both goalies, they both play the puck really well and they’re both very vocal.”
Pacioretty, who led the team offensively with two goals and one assist, said that while it was tough to watch Stolarz go down, gave props to Woll for keeping the game steady when he came in.
“That’s huge,” Pacioretty told media postgame. “I mean, that’s definitely not an easy position to be in, I’ve never experienced it, but they always talk about how that’s a tough situation, and he came to play.”
The Maple Leafs will be back in action on Saturday night when they visit the Detroit Red Wings.
