Leafs Announce Qualifying Offers to Marner, Kapanen, Johnsson, Carcone

With the deadline for extending qualifying offers to restricted free agents today, the Leafs announced who will be receiving qualifying offers, and who will be leaving for free agency.

Three out of the four shouldn’t be surprising at all. Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen have not only been qualified, but apparently have contracts that have been “agreed upon”, and will be made official once the Mitch Marner contract is sorted out.

Speaking of Marner, he’s the other obvious qualifying offer, being one of the star players for the Leafs, although his negotiations have turned into quite the debacle. While this will probably end with the Leafs calling his bluff, and his camp caving, it’s still not 100% guaranteed.

The other qualifying offer goes to Michael Carcone, a right winger who joined the Marlies partway through the season as the return for Josh Leivo. The 23 year-old had 44 points in 62 games between Utica and the Marlies, and has shown some potential to be a decent player.

Gabriel Gagne, Nicholas Baptiste, Jordan Subban, Igor Ozhiganov, and Eamon McAdam all didn’t receive qualifying offers and will become unrestricted free agents. The only of note would be Ozhiganov, but this was obvious considering that he’s already left for Europe.
