The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off a blockbuster sign-and-trade on Friday by acquiring Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2026 fifth-round pick. Toronto signed Raddysh to an eight-year extension, reportedly worth $8.5 million per season.
There were plenty of rumours suggesting that the Leafs were going to be big players in the Raddysh sweepstakes if he made it to market, given their longstanding need for a shot from the point. It was rarely considered that a sign-and-trade would be possible because it seemed likely at the outset that the Lightning would be able to retain the late-bloomer.
Instead, the Leafs beat out on the market and were able to sign him to a reasonable deal relative to what Raddysh could have made in free agency. That isn’t to say this deal is not without risks since he is fresh off a breakout 22-goal and 70-point season, but it is clear the Leafs are serious about rebounding from a disastrous 2025-26 season.
We asked you on social media for your thoughts on the Raddysh sign-and-trade, and here are some of the highlights:
A lot of Leafs fans were understandably thrilled to wake up to the news that the team was able to land Raddysh, especially just over a week before the market opens up. The fact that the blueliner grew up a Leafs fan and got signed to a deal that is deemed fair in comparison to what he could have made is a bonus.

GM John Chayka made it clear during his introductory press conference that one of his top priorities in the offseason was to change the makeup of the blueline. In just three days, he was able to address that with the addition of Emil Andrae in the Joseph Woll trade and now the acquisition of Raddysh. There is still plenty of work that needs to be done, but the Leafs now look a lot better defensively compared to how they did at the end of last season.
No complaints. He's going to be the puck moving 1st D that they've been trying to force Rielly to still be. If he sticks around Rielly will drop in no problem on 2nd pair

The move comes at an interesting time with the Leafs contemplating moving on from Morgan Rielly. He had been their number one defenceman for the better part of a decade, though his play had never quite aligned with what would constitute a number one defenceman on a Cup-contending team. The arrival of Raddysh certainly means Rielly is no longer on the top unit, but it remains to be seen if the two will actually compete for ice time.

While there were plenty of Leafs fans pleased with the contract, some had some reservations about the cap hit being well north of $8 million a season and that he is coming off a career year. One thing that is worth noting is that the salary cap is set to explode in the coming years, so Raddysh’s percentage of the cap will gradually go down as the years go on and it won’t be as costly as it may seem at the start.

If nothing else, the Leafs finally added something that they haven’t had on their blueline in quite some time: a booming shot from the point. Whether you consider Dion Phaneuf, Bryan McCabe, or someone else the last Leaf to be that type of player, Raddysh fills a need that has been a long time coming.

If there were any reservations about the Leafs’ attempts to try and rebound next season, the Raddysh sign-and-trade should put those fears to bed. Chayka is trying to reopen the contention window while giving the likes of Auston Matthews and William Nylander the best chance at success. Combine that with the arrival of likely Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick, and there is plenty to be excited about again with the Leafs.
