Toronto Marlies forward Alex Steeves entered the record books on Saturday afternoon during a game against the Laval Rocket.
Steeves set the all-time franchise record for points, when he converted on a one-timer on the power play during the first period. This marked Steeves’ 169th point with the Marlies, passing Kris Newbury for the all-time record. Newbury played for Toronto’s AHL franchise from 2005-2009, while playing in 76 career NHL games.
Here is the record-setting play:
Steeves was elated and celebrated his accomplishment in style, before peeling to the bench with his teammates.
The 24-year-old is currently in his fourth season with the Marlies, with 11 goals and 15 points in 12 games. He recorded 27 goals and 57 points in 65 with the Marlies last season. Steeves was recently called up to the Maple Leafs amid a wave of injuries to the regular forward corps, but failed to generate any offensive impact, going without a point in four games before being returned to the Marlies, while averaging just over 11 minutes of ice time. He did not require waivers, which made it easier to rule him as the odd man out.
F Alex Steeves is now the Marlies all-time points leader with his 169th point, overtaking F Kris Newbury. Steeves has 80 goals & 89 assists in 200 games over four seasons. Newbury recorded his final point for Toronto on Jan. 31, 2009. He played four seasons in Toronto (198 GP).

There’s still potential for Steeves to earn a larger role with the Maple Leafs and he’s been a proficient scorer at the AHL level. Steeves currently leads the Marlies in scoring despite his NHL stint, and he’s just about to enter his prime as well.
Steeves graded out as The Leafs Nation’s 10th-ranked prospect this summer and is a flexible asset within the organization.
It’s a tremendous accomplishment for Steeves, who will continue to be a key component for the Marlies, while trying to work his way back to the NHL level in some capacity. Steeves could potentially break the all-time Marlies goal record (91) set by Ryan Hamilton during the 2008-09 to 2012-13 seasons, currently trailing Hamilton by 11 goals.
