Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka has been the most active general manager in the league this summer, using optimization concepts to revamp the entire organization. From this corner of the beat, Chayka has done a terrific job in his short tenure with the Maple Leafs, positioning the team for a return to the playoffs, while navigating two different timelines for contention. It’s why his decision to part ways with Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, among several others including Mark Leach, was considered a surprise to the entire NHL ecosystem on Friday. Parting ways with Wickenheiser may have been Chayka’s first major mistake with the Maple Leafs.
“As part of our ongoing evaluation of the organization, we have made the difficult decision to part ways with some valued colleagues,” Chayka said in a release issued by the Maple Leafs. “These decisions were not easy and are not a reflection of the commitment of the impacted people. We are sincerely grateful for everything they have contributed to this organization and wish them nothing but the very best in the future.”
Wickenheiser was also clear that this decision took her by surprise, after holding a conversation with Chayka, where he made it clear that she wouldn’t have a significant role with the Maple Leafs. We’ll get to Wickenheiser’s sterling pedigree momentarily, but the timing of it is certainly bizarre. Wickenheiser was tasked with running the Maple Leafs’ development camp last weekend, where she held two media availabilities, answering questions about prospects and systems in great detail.
It’s an astonishing decision. If Chayka is the embodiment of the league’s evolution, where MBAs and mathematicians hold increasing sway in front offices across professional sports, he should know to keep the smartest person in the room. Dr. Wickenheiser is the second-greatest women’s hockey player of all-time (if you want to make arguments for Angela James or Cammi Granato here, that’s besides the point!) and completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Toronto. And while it’s almost silly to read her resume out loud, it’s baffling that Chayka couldn’t find room for a four-time Olympic gold medallist, a first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer, during a summer where he’s actively trying to revolutionize the organization.
Wickenheiser built trust and familiarity with the team’s prospect pool, and players were evidently impressed by her instruction. Toronto just completed the 2026 NHL Draft, where they landed Gavin McKenna, but drew universal praise for deepening the prospect pool on Day 2. As the Maple Leafs will need to graduate prospects to the NHL in short order to support McKenna, and to avoid the mistakes of the first decade of the Auston Matthews era, it’s imperative that the Maple Leafs carry a robust development staff. Chayka is within his rights to shape the organization as he pleases, and in this corner of the internet, he’s done a terrific job through the opening two months. Completely overhauling certain departments aren’t a bad thing either. Parting ways with Wickenheiser, an all-time great, who is universally respected within the hockey and medical communities, while building genuine rapports and support for young players, seems completely misinformed.
Time will tell if this constitutes a major mistake, but from our vantage point, it seems like Chayka and the Leafs’ braintrust completely mismanaged a pivotal asset, and a terrific human being in Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser.
