The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming down to the wire when it comes to getting their 23-man roster finalized.
That’s left the team offering up a slew of depth players via waiver placement – but on Tuesday, it was confirmed that all six of their waiver players had cleared and are now eligible for reassignment to the Marlies.
That list was comprised of the following:
Colin Greening (C)
Vincent LoVerde (D)
Chris Mueller (C)
Kerby Rychel (LW)
Ben Smith (F)
Garret Sparks (G)
The Sparks clearing is an intriguing one for Toronto, as he’s a potential to take over as backup for the Leafs if things don’t go well for Curtis McElhinney. He’ll now remain in the team’s system, getting in games at the AHL level until he’s potentially needed for a call-up.
Seeing Smith sent down to the AHL is a bit of a relief, after he seemed to take up roster space over the last few seasons – while Rychel’s lack of a claim suggests that the former first rounder truly is considered a bit of a write-off at this point, despite putting up 52 points in 73 AHL games last year.
