Furies Postgame: Furies Win, Opening Night, and The New-Look Blades

Toronto Furies hockey is back! The 2016-17 season began with a spectacular game against longtime rivals, the Boston Blades.
THE RUNDOWN
- A lot of back and forth, back and forth in the first period. Fans were getting their money’s worth and Toronto was really putting Lauren Dahm, goaltender for the Blades, to work. First period remained scoreless, SOG: Toronto 15, Boston 4.
- Second period was all about the Furies. Chances upon chances, but none of them hit the back of the net. Two powerplays for the Furies, but they couldn’t capitalize on either. Second period remained scoreless, SOG: Toronto 18, Boston 3.
- After all the shots on goal, something had to give. Natalie Spooner scores the first Toronto Furies goal of the 2016-17 season, and her first as the Furies captain, at the halfway point of the third period. After a scramble in front, Boston’s Erin Kickham tied it up with 8:21 remaining in the third.
- With 22 seconds left in the third, Furies score, but it’s not meant to be. The goal is called back, and the game heads to overtime. Overtime begins 4-on-4, instead of full strength, with Fast in the box for Toronto, and St.Germain in the box for Boston, both serving four minutes for roughing.
- With only 1:15 left in the overtime period, Carolyne Prevost knocked in Spooner’s rebound, winning the game for the Furies.
BLUE WARRIOR
Carolyne Prevost was given first star of tonight’s game and she definitely deserved it. She was a force to be reckoned with on the ice, picking up rebounds and consistently driving the play. It’s obvious that she is a CWHL veteran, and even more obvious that she and Spooner have played together before. Prevost gained a lot of good quality scoring chances this game, and even though only one went in for her, it was the one that really counted.
SHOUTOUT
The biggest of shoutouts in this game go to Lauren Dahm, goaltender from the Blades. It was revealed after the game was finished that Dahm, a former Clarkson Golden Knight, had not suited up for a professional level game in quite a while. Watching her come out to challenge Spooner, or make save after save, you would never think so. Dahm kept the Blades in this game, so she gets my shoutout for this game.
