Furies Postgame: Rookies Getting It Done in Furies Win

The Furies Opening Weekend came to a close with the Furies taking two points in a decisive 6-1 win over the Boston Blades in their Sunday afternoon game at MasterCard Centre.
THE RUNDOWN
- The Furies started their second goalie Sonja van der Bliek in net, while the Blades kept Lauren Dahm in for the back-to-back.
- First star from Saturday night, Carolyne Prevost opened the scoring in the middle of the first with assists from Julie Allen and Kelly Terry.
- Renata Fast was sent to the box shortly after for interference, but the Furies made the most of it, with Jenelle Kohanchuk scoring a shorthanded goal with an assist from Natalie Spooner. Both teams had another chance to capitalise on the powerplay but missed out. Furies ended the first period, 2-0. SOG: Toronto 9, Boston 9.
- The second period was hard-fought but scoreless. A lot of back and forth between the two teams. The Furies had to kill off 2 penalties in quick succession, Michelle Sanders for body checking, and Vanessa Spataro for tripping. Furies still lead 2-0 after the second. SOG: Toronto 7, Boston 3.
- The Furies turned it on in the third period, with both goals and penalties coming thick and fast. Michela Cava scored her first in a Furies uniform, making it 3-0 Furies. Fast made it 4-0, her first goal in a Furies uniform, with Terry making it 5-0 soon after.
- Boston’s Leary made it 5-1, but the Furies answered back quickly with another Spooner goal to make it 6-1. Final SOG: Toronto 27, Boston 18.
BLUE WARRIOR
Jenelle Kohanchuk was the MVP of the Sunday game. After missing a full season last year, Kohanchuk stepped out onto the ice on opening weekend and found her feet and her scoring touch straight away. Kohanchuk was an offensive machine this game, picking up a lot of scoring chances, and assisting on others.
SHOUTOUT
Shoutouts for the Sunday game go to Furies rookies Renata Fast and Michela Cava, both of whom scored their first goals as Toronto Furies in today’s game. Cava also notched an assist while playing on the first line with Spooner, giving her her first multipoint game as well.
