Leafs announce plans for Centennial Season
It’s been a fun hundred years of being richer and cooler than all and better than most. The Toronto Maple Leafs are celebrating their centennial in this upcoming 16/17 season, and today, the team made some announcements as to what the year will entail.
Here are the key points:
- The Toronto Maple Leafs will have their own centennial exhibit at the Hockey Hall of Fame this year. “This exhibit will highlight and celebrate the blue and white jersey over the past 100 years”, said Ron Ellis, himself a former Leaf and the Director of Public Affairs at the hall.
- The Leafs will wear the Toronto St. Pats jerseys for the first time in 15 years on March 18th, 2017 against the Chicago Blackhawks. The jersey was unofficially put on hiatus after Busher Jackson’s nephew suffered a fatal heart attack during that night’s festivities, but this is definitely the right day to bring it back.
- Former Leafs Borje Salming and Eric Lindros will captain the Hall of Fame Legends Alumni Game. Lindros is a new inductee, going into the Hall this year with Pat Quinn and others.
- The Leafs will be updating the banners in the rafters this season. Given that the present banners use the letter and number font of the Ballard Era, this isn’t a massive shock, though it’ll be interesting to see whether anybody else joins them this season.
- Oh, and here’s the incredibly simple, bevelled and glossed up for some reason centennial logo. The flat version shown on the screen, honestly, was nicer.
Overall, it doesn’t look like a ton was announced, though more could still come out by the end of the day. it looks like it’s going to be a very fun year for a historic franchise. Though, I’d appreciate some of these ideas also sneaking their way in, in my own biased opinion. How do you feel about today’s announcements?
