Leafs Go Low Risk High Reward and Sign Tyler Ennis

The Leafs made a move that’s pretty hard not to love and that’s this…
That’s right. Only $650k for a player who is now three years removed from being a pretty decent second line player.
The 28 year old, 5’9 winger was recently bought out by the Minnesota Wild, and it’s safe to say there wasn’t a whole lot of interest in a player coming off a 22 point season. It should be noted that it was a healthy season, after Ennis only playing 74 games combined in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns.
The numbers on Ennis aren’t great, but that’s with the expectation that Tyler Ennis will definitely be a Leafs regular. That’s probably not the expectation. Ennis may be under contract but he will absolutely be competing for an NHL job, that may take the form of a fourth line role, 13th forward, or potentially a leader on the Marlies.
It’s also noteworthy that Ennis has played some center over his time in the NHL, and could be a 4th line center option on a Leafs team that will barely use anyone other than Tavares, Matthews, or Kadri up the middle.
Here’s Ennis scoring on his new team off the mistake of his likely new linemate…

At the end of the day this is about the least objectionable signing ever, and has the chance to really pay off for the Leafs. All it cost them was a players contract, $650k instead of waiting to offer a pro tryout. That seems worthwhile to me.
