The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have made cuts to their training camp roster, as Wednesday’s regular season opener draws near.
A few training camp standouts have made their way down to the Toronto Marlies today. Calle Rosen and Trevor Moore both head back to the AHL after impressive showings, and last year’s first-round selection Timothy Liljegren heads down as well.
Expect most, if not all of these players to also report to the Marlies if they make it through the waiver wire.
Of the 26 players who remain with the Leafs today, there are some interesting storylines yet to be written. Igor Ozhiganov, Connor Carrick, Justin Holl and Martin Marincin have all stuck around, meaning there is at least one (likely two) cuts left to be made on the blue line.
Additionally, all three of Calvin Pickard, Garret Sparks and Curtis McElhinney remain. The battle for the Leafs’ backup spot may come right down to the wire – or will at least be resolved when those who don’t make the cut have a better chance of clearing waivers.
It’s also worth noting that Frederik Gauthier also remains with the big club, as William Nylander continues to go unsigned. The fact that Gauthier remains could either be a result of Babcock’s “tie goes to the veteran” philosophy of keeping Gauthier over standouts like Trevor Moore, or could signal that Nylander’s RFA situation is expected to be resolved before opening night.
Regardless, expect more news of cuts in the coming days.
