Leafs Postgame: Leafs Host ‘Hockey Talks!’ Mental Health Awareness Night, Get Edged in OT

7 years agoThe Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the ‘Hockey Talks!’ mental health awareness night in collaboration with CAMHS tonight. They also hosted the Montreal Canadiens. With two Auston Matthews goals, the Leafs took the lead, lost it, and tied it up again…. But ultimately, it was the Habs who came away with the W.
THE RUNDOWN
- Starting in goal for the Maple Leafs is Frederik Andersen. Starting in goal for the Canadiens is Carey Price.
- Habs’ Lekhonen takes the first penalty of the game, a two minute interference call. Toronto on the powerplay.
- Leafs’ Gardiner takes one not long after, a two minute hooking call at 8:27. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Matthews puts the Leafs on the board first with assists from van Riemsdyk and Gardiner. 1-0 Leafs.
- Nylander heads to the box with less than a minute left in the first on a two minute slashing call. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Leafs start the second period with 1:11 remaining of their penalty kill.
- At 6:39 in the second, Soshnikov takes a 2 minute holding penalty. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Pacioretty puts the Habs on the board with a goal at 7:29 in the second. 1-1 tied game.
- Petry heads to the box for tripping at 12:30 in the second. Toronto on the powerplay.
- At 16:21 in the second, Galchenyuk puts the Habs ahead with the assist from Nesterov. 2-1 Canadiens.
- Matthews ties up the game with his second of the night early in the third. 2-2 tied game.
- Nylander heads off soon after, taking a two minute penalty for high sticking. Toronto on the penalty kill.
- Regulation ends tied at 2-2. Game heads to overtime.
- Shaw scores the overtime winner for the Habs. 3-2 Canadiens.
BLUE WARRIOR
Tonight’s Blue Warrior has to go to the lone Leafs goal scorer in tonight’s game, Auston Matthews. Matthews took control of the game tonight, scoring twice and getting a lot of breakout opportunities in front of the net. Andrew Berkshire, of Twitter fame, worked out tonight that Matthews only has 6 fewer goals than Connor McDavid in his career. That, and Matthews’ 30th goal of the season, is quite frankly ridiculous.
SHOUTOUT
Today’s shoutout goes to the Maple Leafs organisation’s continuing work with CAMH and ‘Hockey Talks!’ The Leafs’ ongoing work raising mental health awareness is five years strong this year. Players have filmed PSAs encouraging people to end the stigma surrounding mental health, worn helmet decals during games, and donated tickets to CAMH patients. The night and its message holds a special importance to a lot of people, myself included, and the Leafs being so heavily involved with CAMH and ‘Hockey Talks!’ is something that desperately needs to be encouraged to continue.
