You know what? If you’re scrolling by this article right now, pausing, and saying “holy ****, the Leafs played tonight?”, I don’t blame you at all. First off, it’s Sunday, which makes it weird enough to see the Leafs on TV. Secondly, does anybody even care anymore?
I don’t think the Leafs do, as they’ve proven by getting shut out 4-0. No, seriously, tonight too.

The Rundown

Thirty seconds into the game, Alexander Ovechkin found himself wide open. By that, I mean he had Korbinian Holzer in front of him, but Holzer was pretty much just half-poking his stick out and screening James Reimer. This left Ovechkin enough room to cut and shoot, which is not something you want to let the best goal scorer of our generation do. This made it 1-0 Caps and gave Ovy his 40th of the year.
Early in the second, Ovechkin struck again. This time, nobody bothered to cover him as he circled around and went towards the net, picking up an easy rebound and beating James Reimer. The game was basically a lost cause at this point, but for good measure, the Leafs gave him more opportunity in the third period. Left alone to take his trademark shot on the powerplay, Ovechkin only avoided a hat trick because his shot went off of Roman Polak’s stick and off the post. Troy Brouwer turned that into a pass to Marcus Johansson, however, and made it a 3-0 game. Joel Ward added an empty netter.

Blue Warrior

Alexander Ovechkin. Now, technically, he’s a member of the Washington Capitals, but he grew up a Leafs fan and understood the implications of this game. Once a first overall pick himself, playing on a line with 4th overall pick Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin knows that for his former team of choice to succeed, it would be best for them to pick high, and really stepped up his game to deliver them a big zero points tonight.

Notes

This is the last game that multiple players on tonight’s roster will ever play in blue and white. At least, that’s the plan. Let’s see how that goes.
