Leafs Prospect Update: November 25, 2013

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed a pair of their prospects this past week, inking Erie’s Connor Brown and Guelph’s Matt Finn to three year entry-level deals.

 

We’ve talked about both of these players at great lengths around these parts recently. Brown, who was picked by the Leafs in the 6th round of the 2012 Entry Draft, leads the OHL in scoring with 19 goals and 49 assists in only 25 games. Those kind of numbers are worthy of an NHL contract, but one imagines Brown might spend two, maybe three of those entry-level years in the AHL developing his game before he gets a sniff of the big leagues. As an undersized winger, Brown will need to score and score often if he’s to carve out of long career – goals and assists are his calling card.

 

Finn, picked in the 2nd round of the 2012 Draft, is having a similarly impressive season. The 6’1, 204lb defender was poised for a breakout last season, but battled injuries and illness, and was limited to 41 games (in which he still contributed a solid 31 points). This year Finn has five goals and 23 points in 24 games, and is a big reason why the Storm are tied for first in the OHL with Brown’s Otters.

 

Also relevant – Brown and Finn became teammates on Thursday night, suiting up for Team OHL in a 5-2 loss to the Russian Selects in the third game of the Subway Super Series. Both were held without a point, though Brown will get another shot at the Russians tonight in Sudbury.

After scoring only three points in his first nine games, University of Minnesota-Duluth sophomore Tony Cameranesi is starting to heat up. Following a three-assist weekend against North Dakota a week ago, Cameranesi scored a goal and added an assist in a 6-2 Bulldogs win over their No. 1 ranked inter-campus rival Golden Gophers. The 5’9, 175 lb speedster now has two goals and eight points in 12 games.
