Johnson Scoring All The Goals
It seems like every time I write a prospect update I’m starting off with news from Sweden. Apologies to Don Cherry, but it’s been Andreas Johnson and William Nylander who’ve been the Leafs’ most consistently productive prospects so far this season. Quite frankly, it isn’t even close.
Johnson potted three goals over the weekend; a shootout goal on Friday that gave Frolunda the 3-2 win over Vaxjo, and another two goals on Saturday in a 3-1 win over AIK. I highly suggest visiting Johnson’s player page on the Frolunda website and checking out the video of those goals. All of them were pretty fun to watch. Unfortunately, the SHL doesn’t provide embed links for their online video.
The Leafs’ seventh round pick of the 2013 Draft, Johnson has 14 points in 18 games so far this season. Even more impressive, his 10 goals makes him Frolunda’s leading goal scorer, and second in all of the SHL.
Speaking of Nylander…
Since being loaned to MODO for the 2014-2015 season, Nylander has been producing at a very high clip. Nay, the highest clip. In eight games so far, Nylander has scored three goals and 11 points. He might only be tied for 26th in league scoring, but Nylander’s 1.38 points-per-game average leads the entire SHL. This might not be sustainable throughout the season, but that’s a heck of a good start nonetheless.
All I want for Christmas is a Nylander and Johnson on a line together at the 2015 World Juniors. More specifically, I want tickets to see this in person. (Edit: I’ve been corrected. Johnson is too old to play in the U20s, as he turns twenty a few weeks before the tournament. It’s ok, Nylander will do just fine without him.)
Other News
- Tyler Biggs leads the Orlando Solar Bears in goals with four in eight games. Don’t call it a comeback.
- Garret Sparks is tops in GAA (1.22) and SV% (.966) in the ECHL amongst goaltenders who’ve played more than one game.
- Dakota Joshua continues to produce for Sioux Falls. In two weekend games (a loss to Des Moines and a win over Sioux City), Joshua scored three goals. His 14 points in 12 games places him tied for second in USHL scoring.
- Rinat Valiev has two goals and five points through five games so far this season. He might not be a point-per-game player all year, but the Buffalo Sabres’ return of Sam Reinhart to Kootenay will give Valiev an exceptional target to dish the puck up ice to. Bring on the apples.
- Carter Verhaeghe is struggling to put up similar numbers to what he’s used to, but the Niagara IceDogs have been downright terrible this year. He has six goals and 10 points in 15 games.
- Frederik Gauthier has one goal in four games since returning from injury. Yikes.
- Dominic Toninato and Tony Cameranesi both went pointless in Minnesota-Duluth’s weekend split with Miami University. Despite this, Toninato is still tied for the NCHC goal scoring lead with six in eight games.
- Nolan Vesey had an assist in each of Maine’s two weekend victories over Massachusetts. He’s got three assists in eight games to start the season.
- Max Everson went pointless in Harvard’s first game of the season yesterday. That’s not newsworthy. I just wanted to remind you that Max Everson is a person and also a Leafs prospect.
