Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman @Mark Giordano picked up his first goal with his new team late in the first period of Thursday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.
Giordano, 38, received a pass from teammate @Ilya Mikhevey at the left point and walked in toward the circle on his side. Intending to find a streaking @John Tavares in the slot, Giordano released a pass that deflected off Jets @Logan Stanley and @Brenden Dillon before finding its way past goaltender @Eric Comrie.
@Timothy Liljegren also assisted on Giordano’s first goal as a Leaf (and his seventh of the season), which cut the Jets’ lead to 2–1 at the 15:03 mark of the opening frame.
Giordano’s tally redeemed him somewhat after he was exposed defensively by Jets forward @Blake Wheeler on the game’s first goal. The veteran rearguard ultimately finished the game with a plus-one rating in 20:09 of total ice-time and picked up an assist on Liljegren’s goal late in the third period. In his first five games with the Maple Leafs, Giordano has one goal and two points (both of which came in the game against Winnipeg).
@William Nylander scored twice for the Leafs on Thursday, with Giordano, Liljegren, Mikheyev, Tavares, and @Auston Matthews also picking up goals (with the latter becoming the fourth Leaf to ever score 50 in a single season) in the 7–3 win over the Jets.
The Leafs improved to 42–19–5 with the victory; the Jets fell to 33–26–10. Giordano and Co. will return to action in time for Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:00 p.m. ET.
