Marlies Beat Sens In OT

Once again, it’s late April and the Toronto Marlies are the only professional hockey game in town. It’s a shame, but at the same time, at least there’s a good chance at a stretch run for a bunch of these prospects. But first, the season has to be closed out, and part of that includes a whirlwind game against the Binghamton Senators, wherein the blue and white escaped with a 5-4 overtime win.
The Marlies were first to strike in this one. With Shane Prince in the penalty box, the Toronto powerplay went to work, and on that man advantage, TJ Brennan found Stuart Percy, who fired a shot from the point that earned him his third goal of the year. That was the only notable event in an otherwise Marlies-controlled first peroid.
Early in the second period, the Senators tied things up on a play that saw Prince find Buddy Robinson in front of the net, beating Drew MacIntyre with a wrister. Just before the midway mark of the game, David Broll dropped the gloves with Darren Kramer, an evenly matched bout that was separated once the two had tired themselves out. A minute later, Jerred Smithson took advantage of a misplay of the puck and tapped a puck past Andrew Hammond to give Toronto the lead once again. Hammond’s struggles continued, as Sam Carrick trickled his 12th of the year into the net just two and a half minutes after that.
From there, the Senators clawed back. Robinson tied the game with five minutes left in the second, taking advantage of a puck coughed up by Korbinian Holzer. The game was tied by Wacey Hamilton, who opened the third period scoring by splitting Brennan and Kevin Marshall and tucking the puck into the net. Two minutes later, the Senators took the lead courtesy of a floater by David Dziurzynski. Things looked dire for Toronto, but with eight minutes left, the powerplay repaired the situation, as once again, Brennan fed Percy for a long bomb, the last goal of regulation.

Other Notes
- That was the most stereotypical Brennan game possible after winning his Eddie Shore Award. Two powerplay assists, a goal you’d expect from a top end winger, and on the ice for a couple against. That brings him to 25 goals and 72 points in 74 games played this season.
- Drew MacIntyre played his first game since returning to the Marlies, and it was probably one he’d like to have back, allowing 4 goals on 27 shots. That last Senators goal was particularly spotty, but we’ll see what he looks like in the games to come before being overly concerned.
- Jerry D’Amigo seems to always put up numbers when he’s back home; the Binghamton native had two assists.
- Sam Carrick was littering the net last night. Beyond his goal, he lead the team in shots, with six.
- Speaking of goals and shots, this was a big night for Stuart Percy. He had two goals in 68 games going into this game and doubled his total.
- The Marlies play their final road game of the season on Friday, against the Utica Comets.
