Marlies Lose 3-1 To Texas

It’s a new season, but it’s not hard to look back to the immediate past. For the returning members of the Toronto Marlies, you have to imagine last year’s conference finals were in the back of their minds as they took on the Texas Stars last night. Unfortunately for them, the only person who earned redemption tonight wasn’t on either team last year.
The Rundown
Just like in the playoffs, Texas came out flying, taking nearly twice as many shots as Toronto in the first period. Christopher Gibson was doing a pretty good job of keeping things under control, but in the closing minutes of the period, Greg Rallo and Radek Faksa scored within a minute of each other to leave the Marlies down two after one.
Spencer Abbott put the Marlies within one midway through the second period, scoring his third goal of the season, but that was the closest the team got. Gibson kept the game close, but with Andrew MacWillliam in the box and the net empty, Brett Ritchie added an empty netter to close it off and give the game a 3-1 final.
Blue Warrior
Definitely going to go with Christopher Gibson. Making 34 saves on 36 shots is no small feat, and he kept the team in it even as the game spiraled downhill. It’s always good to see any of the young goalies pull out a strong performance – depth is always useful.
Notes
- Jussi Rynnas must be feeling pretty good about beating his former team. The next step of revenge would be making the NHL full time, though I’m not holding my breath for him.
- Spencer Abbott lead the team with four shots. He’s looked pretty good in the past few games; almost in the form that he had last year.
- Giving up seven powerplays is probably not the way to go, especially when you give up goals on two of them. Conversely, going 0 for 6 on your own man advantages isn’t a great night either.
- Petri Kontiola returned to the lineup after missing some time with an illness. He took two penalties and was a -1.
- The Marlies play their next game on Friday against San Antonio.
