Marlies Score 6 in Action Packed Win over Abbotsford

Sometimes the world gets a little dry, but when it rains, it pours. Today, the rain was in the second period, and it came in the form of a torrential downpour. Eight goals in the second period provided the entertainment, and a couple in the third put the Toronto Marlies so close to a playoff spot that they could taste it.
The first period came and went in relative silence. With only one powerplay and no significant scoring chances or goals, it just kinda… happened. But three minutes into the second period, with Shane O’Brien in the box for a dangerous hit to Spencer Abbott, TJ Brennan blasted home his 22nd goal of the year, putting the Marlies on top for about four minutes. Within a minute and a half of each other, Max Reinhart and Brett Olson beat Drew MacIntyre to give Abbotsford the lead, with Ben Street trailing just behind.
But just as quick as the pendulum swung one way, it headed back the other. Jamie Devane made it 3-2 just twenty seconds later, and Greg McKegg took a minute to tie the game. Before the period was over, Tyler Biggs completed the full circle and put his team up with his seventh goal of the year. But wait! With five seconds left in the period, Shane O’Brien scored not once, but twice (the first one initially waved off and later counted as “the goal”) to tie it back up heading into the third.
Midway through the first, the Marlies regained the league and never looked back. Josh Leivo scored his seventeenth of the season, and Carter Ashton soon followed with the insurance marker, his 16th in 22 games. Toronto ended the game on a powerplay, didn’t succeed, but ultimately, it didn’t matter.
Other Notes
- Despite a shaky second period, Drew MacIntyre still came out of the game with 30 saves on 34 shots. One would be wise to judge his play in segments instead of as a whole, in this case.
- The Marlies played with five defenceman, as Eric Knodel was set to play, but had the flu.
- Andrew MacWilliam suffered an injury after a hit to the head. He had trouble skating after impact. Spott wouldn’t call it a concussion, but left room for implication.
- Spencer Abbott left the game early as well, from the O’Brien hit. Spott described it as a “rib strain”
- The North Division title will be clinched as soon as Toronto gains or Rochester loses a point.
- The Marlies play their next game on Friday, against the Utica Comets.
