Marlies sign a pair of NCAA Free Agents
By Jon Steitzer
4 years agoThe only thing that tops the excitement of NCAA free agent season, is when those free agents get signed to AHL contracts, so hooooo doggy, is today an exciting day.
That’s right, two, count ’em, two NCAA players will be joining the Marlies/Growlers the next time hockey is played.
First up, we have Bobby McMann, a 6’1 center from Wainwright, Alberta. He’s played all four of his seasons at Colgate and is 23.
Year | School | GP | G | A | P | PIM | |
2016-17 | Colgate Univ. | NCAA | 35 | 5 | 14 | 19 | 12 |
2017-18 | Colgate Univ. | NCAA | 40 | 14 | 16 | 30 | 20 |
2018-19 | Colgate Univ. “A” | NCAA | 36 | 8 | 15 | 23 | 32 |
2019-20 | Colgate Univ. “C” | NCAA | 34 | 10 | 10 | 20 | 58 |
None of his numbers really speak to being NHL bound, but he’s got the potential to help out as system depth, and if a shortened offseason is anticipated, getting depth figured out now makes a lot of sense.
A big-bodied all-around forward that has good offensive instincts and excellent positional awareness during unfolding plays. Plays a power game and drives the net hard. Fluid skater that has room to improve near the top of his acceleration to become more explosive. His maturity, character, and willingness to do what it takes to win is embodied by his humility in taking the time to improve upon and learn all aspects of multiple roles. Explosive shot release and proficient puckhandling ability. Huge potential as an effective two-way forward with skill.
Gordie Green is 23 year old right wing from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He’s 5’8, so already most of you are upset because he’s not gritty enough for you, ignoring the fact that he’s probably not in the Leafs plans and offense at lower levels is something the organization can use if it plans on graduating it’s prospects quickly.
Year | School | GP | G | A | P | PIM |
2016-17 | Miami Univ. (Ohio) | 36 | 8 | 13 | 21 | 8 |
2017-18 | Miami Univ. (Ohio) | 37 | 15 | 18 | 33 | 18 |
2018-19 | Miami Univ. (Ohio) | 38 | 11 | 14 | 25 | 12 |
2019-20 | Miami Univ. (Ohio) “C” | 34 | 14 | 22 | 36 | 26 |
While the offense isn’t exactly standout either, Green was a 2nd team All-Star in his conference and giving him a shot with the Marlies/Growlers isn’t much of a risk.
At the end of the day, these were a couple of signings that happened that I’m sure both of the players are quite excited about, and they’ll be names to know for the pre-training camp rookie tournament, assuming that will be thing next year.
