Marlies Take Game 2, Look To Sweep Milwaukee

Two games in two nights, both at home, 0 and 2 in the season series. Sounds like a near-insurmountable challenge, right? The Toronto Marlies appear to be defying that thought. After a 6-2 victory yesterday, the Blue and White came right back into the BMO Harris Bradley Centre and pulled off a very similar game, winning 5-2.
The Marlies once again opened the scoring in this game, in the dying moments of the first period. Taking advantage of a bad dump, Jerry D’Amigo sent Trevor Smith into the offensive zone, who left the puck for Brandon Kozun. Kozun took a second before ripping a wrist shot into the back of the yet. It was a much needed goal in a period where the Admirals took 15 of 22 shots.
Just before the midway point in the period, Toronto found themselves on a five on three powerplay. and put together this wicked play that gave Sam Carrick his third goal of the series.
It was the best play of a period that was much better controlled by the Marlies, and gave them ample room going into the third. Just a minute into the final period, however, things closed up a bit. Calle Jarnkark took advantage of a feed by Filip Forsberg and blasted a short distance one-timer past Drew MacIntyre to break his shutout bid.
A key moment came for the Marlies as two Milwaukee players took penalties at the same time, one of them being a double minor. Thanks to a slash to Carrick by Francis Wathier, that man-advantage stretched a little longer, and Brandon Kozun took advantage, squeaking through a garbage goal to regain the two goal lead. Late in the third period, Toronto found themselves on the powerplay once again, and needed much less time to covert than previously; Korbinian Holzer fired a point shot to widen the gap to 4-1.
Milwaukee added a goal with a little over a minute to go, but it was of little effect. Jerry D’Amigo added an empty netter before the final buzzer sounded.
Other Notes
- Drew MacIntyre made 24 saves on 26 shots. Another good performance by him. The first goal was one he probably gets a piece of if given another crack at it, but the second was a product of traffc in front of him.
- Josh Leivo suffered a hand injury late in the second period. It looked concerning, but he was back in time for the third period and played through the rest of the game.
- Brandon Kozun had been plenty noticable over the past couple of weeks, but this was the first time in over a dozen games that he put a puck in the back of the net. After getting the first, it only took him two periods to get his next. I guess when it rains, it pours.
- Sam Carrick scored yet again tonight, and tied TJ Brennan for the team shot lead with six.
- The Marlies outshot the Admirals 32 to 11 in the final forty minutes. After a slow start, they had total control of this game.
- A powerplay that goes 3 for 8 and a perfect 6 for 6 penalty kill is a good night out in terms of special teams.
- The Marlies now have three games, all at home, to close this series out. A sweep could occur if they win on Thursday night at Ricoh Coliseum.
