Marlies Win 4-1 Over Peoria

You know what they about the journey from the AHL to the NHL, you’re trying to trade a bus ride to P- NO! That’s it. This horse isn’t just dead, with today’s game, we’ve now hit the point of decomposition. I’m pretty sure that if anyone brings it up to Dallas Eakins again, he’s going to telepathically throw the person into a wall. That may be pushing it, so on to the point – the Toronto Marlies took on the Peoria Rivermen today, desperate for a rebound from their loss to Abbotsford. Despite a lot of key scratches, the Marlies handily beat their opponents 4-1.
Toronto started their road to victory early, as Brad Ross scored his second of the year just seven minutes in. Through several back and forth powerplays, the Marlies scored a late period insurance tally in an unexpected way; Dylan Yeo, not known as a scorer, burst down the ice and wristed home an unassisted marker. The best part? It was a shorthanded goal, something that hasn’t been as common for the Marlies this year as it was last.
The second period saw Jerry D’Amigo score a goal courtesy of Ross, and Greg McKegg, who also assisted on Ross’ goal. Despite three powerplays and a slew of shots, Toronto couldn’t bring the lead any further in the middle frame, but managed to do so in the third. With the man advantage, Ross tipped home the second of the night off a Jake Gardiner wrist shot. Derek Nesbitt snapped Jussi Rynnas’ hopes of a shutout late in the game, but Toronto went on to take the game with the three goal edge.
Other Notes
- In his return from injury and the ECHL, Brad Ross had twice as many goals today as he had in the 20 games prior, with two. His assist was also his first.
- Also on the milestone count, Greg McKegg’s three assists bring him from 12 to 15 points on the year. Jerry D’Amigo’s goal was his 10.
- One more milestone mention for Jake Gardiner, who is now at 20 assists and 30 points. Another fantastic game for him, as he surely heads towards getting a call up from the big club.
- Jussi Rynnas made 20 of 21 saves in a much needed bounce back performance. As fun as relying on MacIntyre is, the Marlies will ultimately need at least two of their goaltenders to perform well at once to succeed.
- Not sure what the reason was for the scratching of Ryan Hamilton and Spencer Abbott. May be injury, may just be a shakeup.
- The powerplay ran at 1 for 6, and penalty kill at a perfect 4 for 4 plus a shorthanded tally.
- The Marlies next game is against the Lake Erie Monsters. It’s a home game, at 7PM on Wednesday.
