Paul Ranger Taken Off On Stretcher After Hit

A scary moment in tonight’s game, as Tampa Bay’s Alex Killorn ran Leafs defenceman Paul Ranger from behind with four seconds left in the first period. Ranger was loaded up and taken off on a stretcher, and was alert during the process. His condition is unknown, but we’ll update you as we have more info
UPDATE: The Leafs say that Paul Ranger is stable, conscious and alert at a nearby hospital, per David Alter.
Killorn was ejected from the game, and it’s not hard to see why. Ranger’s head turns, but his numbers are always facing the boards. Killorn isn’t a dirty player, but it’s a dirty hit, not to mention totally unnecessary with four seconds to go in the period. For now, it’s a game misconduct.
Ranger also has a concussion history; missing a month and a half last season after a hit on January 13th. Considering this was a head first hit, that’s a bit of additional concern.
