REPORT: Colorado Avalanche receive permission to speak to Leafs AGM Kyle Dubas

Those who tuned into Hockey Night in Canada tonight to keep up with Ontario’s other NHL team were treated to an interesting nugget of information regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs this evening. During the second intermission, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Colorado Avalanche have an interest in hiring Leafs assistant general manager Kyle Dubas.
Friedman’s full on-air report was as follows:
“The Colorado Avalanche let go of three assistant coaches and they’re looking for replacements, but they also appear to be looking for some help in the front office. They asked and received permission from the Toronto Maple Leafs to talk to Assistant General Manager Kyle Dubas. I don’t know where it stands right now, but they did get permission to talk with the Avalanche.”
Dubas has been with the Leafs organization since July 2014, serving as both assistant general manager and the General Manager of the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Prior to joining Toronto, he was General Manager of the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
One would presume that any offer from the Avalanche would be a promotion; presumably, to take over Joe Sakic’s job as General Manager there. The Avalanche are fresh off their worst season since they were still the Quebec Nordiques, winning just 22 of 82 games and finishing in 30th by a considerable margin. Despite losing out in the draft lottery, the Avalanche will still have the 4th overall pick in this year’s draft and maintain an interesting core of young to prime age players to work around; perhaps making themselves an enticing project.
Enticing enough to make Dubas leave? That’s the big question. He previously passed on approaches from the Arizona Coyotes, but a year has passed since then. Maybe the situation has changed; I guess we’re about to find out.
