Unsurprisingly, all three leagues in the CHL (OHL, WHL, and QMJHL) have announced over the past couple of days that they’ll be pulling the plug on the 2019-20 regular season. Whether the playoffs and Memorial Cup end up also being cancelled is up in the air.
“In the interest of the safety of our players, officials, staff, fans and the general public, it’s been agreed that the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-20 regular season is the proper course of action to take at this time,” David Branch OHL commissioner said.
A couple of top Leafs prospects will be affected here. 2019 second-round pick Nick Robertson and 2018 third-round pick Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, the two leading scorers of the Peterborough Petes will see their seasons come to an end.
Der-Arguchintsev has likely played his last game in the OHL as he’ll be able to turn pro next season. Robertson can play another season in the OHL, but could also have a legitimate shot at cracking the Leafs’ roster in 2020-21. Robertson finishes the season as the OHL’s goal-scoring champion, racking up 55 goals in just 46 games.
In the QMJHL, 2019 fourth-round pick Mikhail Abramov’s season ends with 76 points in 63 games for the Victoriaville Tigers and 2018 seventh-round pick Zachary Bouthillier finishes with a 0.897 save percentage in 45 games for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
