Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 1995, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Brent Gretzky, brother of NHL legend Wayne.
Brent, a centre, showed up to Leafs camp and donned the number 69, but never played in a game for the club despite the nice jersey choice. Gretzky was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 3rd round of the 1992 draft, and only appeared in 13 games for the organization scoring one goal and three assists.
The Leafs ended up assigning Gretzky to the St. John’s Maple Leafs, where he scored 13 goals and 41 points in 63 games.
What it did do, however, was provide a brief contribution to an NHL record that will likely never be broken. He and his brother Wayne hold the league record for most points scored by brothers — 2,857 for Wayne and four for Brent.
