It was revealed today in a translated Swedish interview that Växjö Lakers defenseman Calle Rosen will sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This report from Expressen announces that he’ll sign with with the Maple Leafs. A rough Google translate:
23-year-old is undrafted, which means he can signal which NHL team at any time. So now is the case, when he decided on Toronto. Nothing, however, will be official until Rosen is done playing with the national team, at the earliest.
Rosen is a left-handed defenseman who has spent the last 2 seasons in the Swedish Hockey League. He scored 33 points in 2 seasons over 93 games. That’s not a number that’ll shock anyone, but it’s a good level of production from the backend for the SHL. Rosen finished 11th among defensemen this season with his 19 points.
With the Leafs urgently needing young defensemen to fit into their ranks, Rosen should be right in the mix with Dermott, Valiev and Nielsen for the future of the Leafs’ bottom 4 left defensemen. It would be logical to see him move to the AHL starting next season to acclimate him to North American rinks, and allow the Leafs to compare him with the other options on a level playing field.
